Y. Sekou Bermiss, Ph.D.

Dr. Sekou Bermiss (pronounced: say-koo burr-meese) is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (NY), and a M.S. and Ph.D in Management and Organizations from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.  He has also served on the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Dr. Bermiss conducts research in the area of strategic human capital management where he explores the micro-foundations of competitive advantage by studying how different forms of employee movement impact a firm’s ability to compete. He was a Fellow at the Filene Research Institute where he led the ‘War for Talent’ Center of Excellence.  His award-winning research has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Research in Organizational Behavior. His research has also been highlighted by Harvard Business Review, the Wall Street Journal, and National Public Radio.  Before entering academia, Dr. Bermiss worked for Deloitte Consulting in New York City.

 

Dr Bermiss has accumulated several awards for his research, teaching, and service including being named to the Faculty Honor Roll and receiving the Eyes of Texas Service award at the University of Texas.  His research has garnered him the Best Published Paper by the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation (2014) and he was selected by Poet and Quants as one of the Top 50 Undergraduate Professors in the nation (2018).
